Manga Pick-up: Oshioki X-Cute

Japanese Title: おしおきエクスキュート

Whenever you go to Japan and poke your head into a bookstore you’re always starkly reminded of the fact that we only get to see the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the manga that get released over there. The manga that foreign fans hear about tend to be the ones that a fan-translator just happens to pick up and stick with.

This manga is a good example of that. It’s pretty popular in Japan with 5 volumes sold so far, yet I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else ever. My keen-eyed girlfriend spotted the cover when we were last in Akiba and thought I’d like it. Boy was she right!

The word Oshioki means punishment and the premise is based around light S&M/bondage tones with the following premise:

Shimizu Kenta’s high school life changed when he was seduced by Aoi Riku as a joke who then proceeded to bully him mercilessly. However, a messenger from hell named Beatrice came and gave him a choker so that he can dominate sinful women as an executor.

At this point you’re probably either sold or completely uninterested, which might be why it never took off outside of Japan (although Nana to Kaoru was popular and focuses a lot more on the kinky themes). Anyway, if the premise intrigues you it’s well worth keeping your eye out for this one. You won’t be disappointed in the ecchi department, with girls being put in all kinds of compromising positions.

The artwork is really moe, the fanservice is shameless and the story/characters is easily digestible trash (in a good way).

I grabbed 3 volumes in Japan, so here’s some dodgy photos (as usual, self-censored but the real deal bares all):

The first 5 chapters have been translated, but seems to have stalled..hopefully someone will pick it back up again. In the mean time I’m going to keep trying to drum up support!

Farewell Zombie Land Saga

Just watched the final episode and I’ve gotta say I really enjoyed the show all up. The first couple of episodes really packed a punch with high energy and constantly surprising comedy and it never fully capitalised on that potential but it instead delivered a pretty decent character- driven idol story.

The character designs and voice acting were definitely stand-out on this one.

The final episode did a good job of pulling together threads throughout the whole run to focus on the final character and end on a satisfying note of finality. Although there’s room for more I’m not sure it would work too well tbh, the zombie premise seems to have already run its course.

Anime Highlights: Dog-girl Tobiichi

Whether you’re a cat person or a dog person, it’s hard to deny the moe of dog-girl Tobiichi. In the Date a Live OVA the normally reserved Tobiichi falls prey to the age old anime trope of misappropriating cosplay ideas to appeal to a male love interest. The result, she dresses up as an obedient dog girl and strikes doggie poses in a deeply embarrassing pubic display. The thing that takes this to the next level is the combination of knee-high socks, school swimsuit and the leather collar to top it all off. Perfection!

Needless to say, the scene left an impression.

The design recently reappeared in a later volume, where she graced the cover (and added a maid head piece I note).img_20181029_1426591464523791315051391.jpg

She even had a really nice figure created of this costume in that appealing squatting pose! I have to admit, this one is on my shelf..

Manga Pickup: Nande Koko ni Sensei ga!?

201383480238437705484852.jpg

On a whim the other night I read through the chapters that are currently translated for the manga Nande Koko ni Sensei Ga!? (Why the hell are you here, Teacher!?). I don’t usually get into the female teacher thing but it had a high rating and is set to get an anime adaptation next year so I thought there must be something to it.

Having delved into it I can see what that something is .. ecchi. This is an honest, unapologetic lewdfest with the notions of comedy and character development carefully woven around a core of panties, tits, ass and all the other good stuff. The author also touches on some mild fetishistic stuff like bondage and peeing, but not enough to kill the fun for those not into it.

Good ecchi requires great artwork, and the quality definitely passes the test here. It’s not on the same god tier as something like To Love Ru, but the characters are beautiful and the artist draws nudity with the tender loving care that’s needed.

The plot is where it really falls down. Being largely episodic – a series of “unfortunate” and ludicrous encounters there’s little space for an overarching plot or even real romantic development. So it’s kind of hard to get into it beyond the visuals.

(censored for this blog but the manga shows nipples)

That said, this will make a great fanservice anime and I’m now quite looking forward to it. The key visual is quite fetching; I don’t think they could have translated the manga designs to anime much better..

New Illya OVA! – Key Visual

Some good news for Illya fans right before Christmas – a new OVA is on its way! The key visual has been released and it’s quite adorable. After the more serious movie, I hope this one is light-hearted and comedic and delivers some good old-fashioned loli fanservice.

New SAO Alicization Key Visual

A new key visual was released for the second cour of Sword Art Online Alicization. It’s definitely looking pretty cool and hints at a more in-depth plot with a new suite of characters for Kirito and Eugeo to deal with.

As an side, I’m quite enjoying the current season, although it’s so far missing a certain something that prior Sword Art anime had – can’t put my finger on it. The action is really well handled though and I’m hoping a more complex plot will make it more engaging to watch.

Akihito Tsukushi’s Doujinshi Artbook – Gears Maiden Nokogiri Kaiju to Shoujo

Scans recently surfaced on yande.re of a doujinshi Artbook from Akihito Tsukushi (under the circle name Doorbeetle). It was originally published in 2 parts at Comiket 75 and 78.

If you’re not familiar with the name, he’s the Mangaka behind Made in Abyss. His artwork has an astonishing level of organic detail and creative flourishes and that’s on full display in his earlier doujinshi works. His world and creature designs are always so rich with imagination! He also has an obsession with lolis and shota that slips into his artwork quite often (can’t complain about the former).

They should make an anime out of this world too!
